mUmBRELLA: names video blogger Troye Sivan as its blogger of the year

Teenage video blogger Troye Sivan from Perth has been named blogger of the year in awards organised by Sivan also won the best vlog category of the awards.

A coming out video he posted in August has had more than 1.6m views

“To be a part of an exciting medium and especially in Australia it’s very, very new, not a lot of people are really giving it a full go – I’m excited to be part of such a new, exciting and revolutionary way to talk to people,” Sivan told Mumbrella.

Sivan first created his YouTube channel in 2007 to upload songs. He now has over 850,000 YouTube subscribers.

“A lot of it was boredom, I’ve always watched vloggers and I always thought I could do it if I wanted to and one day I was extra-bored and decided to give it a go. That was about a year ago, it’s been a crazy year since then,” he told Mumbrella.

His first “honest moment” with his YouTube audience came in August, when the 18-year-old opened up on the internet about his sexuality.

“That was pretty much the first time I’ve ever gotten really honest with my audience. I’d never had a personal moment with them, I’d always made sure everything was funny, light and entertaining. I was really, really nervous about putting that up. There was months of thinking and discussions with my parents before and when it finally went up it was one of the most nerve-wracking thing ever”

Sivan was a panellist at last week’s Festival of Branded Content & Entertainment, organised by Mumbrella’s parent company Focal Attractions.
